When To Hire a Professional: Questions

Posted by on September 13, 2011

I received this email recently and would like to take the time to answer it in case anyone has the same questions.

1) Question: “What types of Jobs should I hire a professional for?”-Frank W., New Mexico
Answer: This is a good question and the answer may be different for each DIY-er. You should first be aware of what you are comfortable with. The amount of time you have available, your health and whether you have helpers or not may play a roll. A good rule of thumb would be to investigate whether or not what you are trying to do would require a permit or license to do so. Licensing and permits assure that you are following city code, and are put into effect for your protection and should be followed. (Even if you do not live in city limits it is wise to follow city code for your own safety) A few examples of jobs to hire a professional are: anything to do with gas, replacing sewer lines, major electrical, etc. It is also wise to be prepared with a plan before starting a project. Know what parts of the project you will be able to complete, and which you will need a professional. Don’t be afraid to ask for others input. Professionals will give estimates and opinions for free.
