Weekend Project: Tailgating Bin

Posted by on September 30, 2011

I actually got this idea from the Lowes Creative Ideas website so if you need another version of this, check them out here

Materials:
Galvanized Tin Bucket

Primer

Blue Tape

Paint (I did 2 Colors)

Paint Brush

Paper (for mess protection)

Plate

Electrical Tape

Stick On Letters

Twine

Steps:
1. So I did my bucket sort of quickly one day and forgot one of the most important steps when painting something and that is priming first! You will want to prime your bucket first so that your paint covers and adheres to the bucket better.
2. Paint your bucket the main color. You don’t have to worry about lines too much because we will tape off and paint over on the next step. I did 2 coats of burnt orange. Let dry.
3. With the blue tape, tape off where you want your accent borders. I did mine where the bucket sort of already had two indention borders. Make sure they are wide enough for the electrical tape to adhere to the bucket and still show enough of the accent border.
4. Paint borders with your accent color. I did mine with two coats of a creamy white.
5. Take off blue tape and touch up any spots that are noticeable. I also painted the trim around the handle ends in the creamy white color.
6. While the paint is drying, take your twine or rope and tie to one end of the handle (your bucket may have two handles, so make sure to do both). Make sure it is tied tight and cut off any loose ends.
7. Begin wrapping the handle over and over again; making sure the rope is kept tight and straight. Don’t let the rope unravel on the handle. Keep wrapping until the entire handle is covered completely with the rope. The rope should not be loose anywhere on the handle. Tie off at the other end and cut off any loose ends.
8. Place the electrical tape (I did black but it comes in all sorts of colors) in the middle of the accent borders all the way around the bucket. (If your team only has two colors, you can skip this step or just skip painting on the borders and use the tape instead).
9. Place the stick on letters on the space between the two borders, spelling out your favorite team or name. (I would get the letters in the same color as either the electrical tape or your accent border) And that’s it!
10. You can decorate it more with ribbon or other logos from your team. You can fill it up with ice and beer/drinks or use it as a bin for plates, forks, napkins, etc for your next tailgating party. This would also make a great bin for little league games as well- you could bring the team snacks or drinks in a bin decorated in their team colors. We made a divider out of cardboard and placed it in the bucket.

This would also make a great present for a sports fan- remember Christmas is just around the corner! You could fill it up with the person’s favorite beer, snacks, mugs/cups, sports movies, sports magazine, calendar, t-shirts, or other sports memorabilia. If you aren’t a sports fan, decorate with your favorite state, animal, or colors, etc. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You could use it as a planter, a dog bowl, a shoe holder in the mudroom, a baby shower gift full of bath time stuff, or make several for organizational stuff around the house… the possibilities are endless!

AND REMEMBER TO SEND US PICTURES OF YOUR OWN CREATIONS!
