10 Ways to Decorate With Your Favorite Sports Team

Posted by on September 20, 2011

Whether it’s a man cave, a game room, or a bedroom, you can find a little inspiration here to show off your team spirit. You may want to go all out or just add a few accents here and there. Either way, you are sure to find some ideas here!

  1. Paint the room with team colors: What better way to show your loyalty than with team colors? You can paint the whole room, just one wall, a wainscot in one color and the top half in another, or do the wall in one color and the trim, borders or stripes in another… the options are endless. And you can bring the color out into the furniture and items in the room. Paint tables, chairs, lamps, etc. What’s the best paint to use? Glidden, found at Home Depot, makes the official paint colors of your favorite sports team. Be sure to check out their website for color combos and inspirations as well.

  2. Use a pennant banner as a window treatment: You can find all sorts of pennants online or in stores that sell team merchandise. If you can find a banner of them in your favorite sports team, you can use it as a window treatment. Simply string across the top of the window. You can nail the two ends to each side of the window or find a rod or hooks that will work. You can also find individual pennants online and at stores. I would recommend this option. Collect the pennants you want to use, try to find ones with rod loops at the top. If you can’t find this kind, simply sew on a loop big enough for a rod to slide through on the top of the back. Collect enough to cover the width of your window and simply hang on a curtain rod above your window. (You can still add floor length solid curtains- on a double rod- that would accent the pennants as well) See picture of an example pennant below:

  3. Wallpaper Boarder: Wallpaper is getting harder and harder to find because not many people use it anymore. Wallpaper can make great accent features if you can find the right one. Wallpaper Wholesaler has a great selection online. You can add a border to any room. Here is an example:

or cut out individual images and either frame them out on the wall somewhere or find other creative uses for them.

  4. Wall Mural: We would recommend searching the internet for a reliable, local artist that does wall murals. You could also call any local art schools to find talent, and they may be more affordable. If you find the right one, the possibilities are endless. You can have them paint the logo, the stadium, the mascot, the players, the uniforms, a replica of a famous picture of the game/team/sport, etc. You could have several of these done in a full wall collage. Or one important piece that you could have framed out on the wall or on a canvas. (You could also purchase one already painted and framed online or at a store that sells paintings) Here are a few examples:

  5. Frame or Shadow Box Souvenirs: Every true fan should have at least a few things laying around the house that mean something to them about the sport or team. You could take these items and have them framed or displayed in a shadow box. Souvenirs from games, tickets, programs, autographs, jerseys or uniforms, awards, etc are great examples of things you could frame or put on display. Here are a few example pictures:

  6. Embroider Chairs/Pillows/Blankets/Rugs: Whether you can do it yourself or can find someone locally who can, embroidery is another great way to customize items with your favorite sports team. You can embroider anything fabric, for example, chairs, pillows, rugs, blankets, etc. Of course there is an endless supply of pre-made team gear you can find online or at stores that sell team merchandise. But if you want to save a little money, consider recovering an old chair, embroider a pillow, add the logo to a rug or blanket, etc. (You can also use iron-ons!) Here are a few example pictures:

  7. Themed Ceiling Fans: Yes they make them! What a great way to support your team and stay cool at the same time! Here are a few examples:

  8. Use Actual Pieces of Sport or Logo: You could hang up a scoreboard. You could hang up a bat or half of a basketball. You could use a basketball net to make a wastebasket. You could use baseball bats or hockey sticks as curtain rods. Stack and glue soccer balls together to make a coat rack or use footballs to create a lamp base. Transform a baseball into a doorknob or hockey pucks into coasters. The possibilities are endless, just takes a little imagination. Once again, you can find these products already made online as well:

  9. Flooring: Who wouldn’t want AstroTurf in their man cave? Or how about a real hardwood court? These items can be easy to install and create your very own field or court. If you need to save on money, just paint or stain (make sure you use the appropriate type of paint/stain depending on what you are painting/staining) on the lines for the field or court onto your existing flooring. Have fun with it!

  10. Art Deco Logo: There are several artistic things you could do with the logo or sports theme. You could (or find already made somewhere or hire someone to) cut your teams logo out of wood or metal to display in your room.

You could take old team t-shirts/jerseys/sweaters, etc and make a quilt to hang in the room.

You could also take the literal object of your teams name, like Spur, Longhorns, the Cowboys star, etc and find merchandise that represents this to use as decorations.

Remember to be creative and have fun with it! And send us your pictures!
